World goes ape for Monkey Business

Granada International

Leading distributor Granada International has scored worldwide success with acclaimed wildlife series Monkey Business, with Managing Director Nadine Nohr today announcing a major new sale to Discovery Networks International for its Animal Planet channel. The sale puts the UK regional series, about the work and inhabitants of a sanctuary for rescued apes, in the top five of Granada International’s best selling programmes, joining ITV networked programmes such as Coronation Street and Agatha Christie’s Poirot. The strand is produced by Granada’s regional franchise Meridian, and its worldwide success highlights Granada International’s policy of bringing high-quality titles from Granada’s strong regional production units to a worldwide audience. Up until now Monkey Business has been seen in the Meridian region in the UK, where it has been a big ratings success for the past six years, and ITV1 is about to screen a networked compilation series featuring the individual stories of six rescued apes. A further series of Monkey Business is now in pre-production. In addition to the worldwide Discovery deal, Monkey Business has also been sold to broadcasters in countries including Australia, France, Canada, Japan, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Israel, Hungary, Czech Republic and Ireland, as well as being released on video and DVD in many territories. Nadine Nohr said, ‘Granada International is fortunate in being able to draw on a wealth of programmes from Granada’s seven regional franchises. They offer an excellent source of programming across all genres for the UK secondary market as well as international channels.’ Monkey Business follows the work of Jim and Alison Cronin, a couple who dedicate their lives to rescuing apes in distress around the globe. At Monkey World, their 60 acre sanctuary in Dorset in southern England, they care for an ever-expanding ‘family’ and fight to protect endangered species. Nadine Nohr adds, ‘Monkey Business is packed with viewer appeal, not only highlighting the treatment of apes around the world, but also a charming animal soap as audiences follow the moving stories and hilarious antics of the individual chimpanzee characters.’
