Eva Air flys rescued orangutans, gibbons to UK

Reuters

LONDON - Eva Air said it will fly two orangutans and three gibbons from Taiwan to London-Heathrow on July 21 en route to a permanent home in Britain.

The five endangered primates, which had been smuggled into Taiwan by the illegal international pet trade, will be transferred from the Pingtung Rescue Centre to the specialist conservation centre at Monkey World in Dorset, Eva said in a statement on Friday. The two female orangutans had been rescued from a public amusement park in Taiwan, and there are also two female gibbons and one male.

The primates are being carried in special crates on an Eva Air Boeing 747-400 Combi's main deck and will arrive in London in the early evening after a 15 hour flight from Taipei.
