At the Centre refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect are rehabilitated into natural living groups.

Gordon's Orang-utans

Gordon Countries of rescue/origin: Gordon

Gordon is a male orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus) who was born on 09/12/97 at Monkey World. He is Amy’s son but was born prematurely and had to spend the first month of his life in an incubator. The Primate Care Staff cared for Gordon when he was first born but he has now been re-introduced to his mother and all the other orang-utans.

Hsiao-lan Countries of rescue/origin: Hsiao-lan

Hsiao-lan is a female orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus) who arrived at the park on 24/01/02 and we estimate that she was born during 1994. Hsiao-lan was rescued by the Taiwanese Authorities after being found at an amusement arcade in Kaoshiung. She is one of the shyest orang-utans we have and her name means “little cloud” in Chinese.

A-mei Countries of rescue/origin: A-mei

A-mei is a female orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus) who arrived at the park on 03/03/04 and we estimate that she was born during 1994. She was smuggled from the wilds of Borneo for the illegal pet trade in Taiwan. Taiwanese authorities confiscated A-mei and she was cared for at the Pingtung Rescue Centre before being re-homed at the park. A-mei had terrible dental problems when she came to the park and has had two operations to remove and root-fill infected teeth.

Hsiao-quai Countries of rescue/origin: Hsiao-quai

Hsiao-quai is a female orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus) who arrived at the park on 21/07/01 and we estimate that she was born during 1994. Hsiao-quai was smuggled from the wild before she was rescued by the Taiwanese Authorities. She was found abandoned with a young male orang-utan in front of a private park in Pingtung City, Taiwan. Hsiao-quai means “good little child” in Chinese.

Jin is a male orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus) who was born at Monkey World on 12/11/09. He is the second son of Hsiao-quai, he is Gordon’s first born, and brother to Kai. The name “Jin” means handsome in Chinese.
